A source at the vessel's St. Petersburg-based firm says the ship's carrying a dangerous cargo but refuses to comment on reports that the cargo is from Russia's weapons exporter Rosoboronexport.

Was the ship Chariot, which set out from St. Petersburg on Dec. 9, carrying cargo from Russia's weapons exporter Rosoboronexport? Then after a refueling stop, the Cyprus newspaper Politis reported that the Chariot was indeed carrying 60 tonnes of ammunition.

Russia has long been a major arms supplier to Syria, where President Bashar Assad is trying to crush a 10-month-old wave of unrest by military force. But instead of moving to a more European position, Putin seems to be a slave of his old Soviet ways. I'd hoped for better, but there you go...
